Speech and Language

As Paediatric Speech and Languge Therapists (SLTs) we are professionals with skills in analysing the communication strengths and difficulties of individuals. We train to work with people of all ages but have specialised in the assessment and treatment of children and young people.

We use observation, informal assessment techniques and more formal tests to identify a range of potential communication impairments. These may include difficulties in the following areas:

  • social interaction
  • language understanding
  • vocabulary use
  • sentence formation
  • speech clarity and fluency
  • voice quality
  • non verbal communication
  • social use of language.

Once a young person's communication profile has been identified we aim to help them meet their communication potential. We may provide advice to families, young people and professionals on how to manage communication difficulties and maximise effective communication in real life settings (such as at school and at home). There will be some communication difficulties where we can suggest specific ideas or work directly with the young person to reduce their impairments.

Our clinical skills equip us to have a significant role in the assessment and treatment of developmental disorders, selective mutism and eating difficulties. When helping young people with  these conditions we work closely with mental health professionals.

SLTs always work closely with a range of different professionals within both education and health services as well as with families and carers. A central part of our role is raising awareness of communication impairments and  issues. We work closely with a wide range of professionals and often form part of the mutli-disciplinary team with mental health and educational colleagues.
