Clinical
I have extensive experience in the assessment and management of a broad range of mental health difficulties including anxiety and mood disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, developmental disorders (ASD, ADHD, Tourette’s) and behavioural difficulties. I enjoy most my work with children and families with highly complex presentations / multiple difficulties. Areas of special clinical interest include developmental disorders, family therapy and working with Looked After and Adopted Children. I pull together my experience in providing expert advice to the courts when decisions need to be made about the mental health needs and future of children and young people.
Management / Strategic Development
When working as a consultant I have provided clinical leadership both within the clinical team and across the Trust. I have experience of membership and chairing of County and Trust wide governance, executive operational and strategy groups / committees. I have overseen significant transition and service developments within the Child and Adolescents Mental Health Service, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Supervision / Consultation
I have provided supervision / consultation to individuals and groups of professionals working with children and young people including junior doctors, mental health practitioners, social workers, care workers.
Teaching / Training
Sharing my experience and knowledge through teaching and training has been a central aspect of my career. I have provided teaching/ training at the University of East Anglia and for Suffolk Social Care Services, general hospital staff, medical students, junior and senior doctors. I have presented at local and Suffolk/Norfolk wide multi-agency and General Practitioner training events and spoken at regional and national conferences.
Subjects include specific mental disorders (depression, anxiety, ASD, ADHD, Tourette’s, psychosis, eating disorders etc.), the more general aspects of mental health difficulties, the impact of attachment on mental health and the needs of specific groups such as Looked After and Adopted Children.
Research
Research has included emotional and behavioural difficulties in children with epilepsy, validation and the development of rating scales (service satisfaction and detection of mental health difficulties) and evaluation of service models. I have three research degrees including an MD., which was awarded for my research into the validity of a rating scale for detecting mental health difficulties in children with epilepsy. I have overseen and participated in audit of many aspects of clinical practice / service delivery.
Continuing Professional Development
Throughout my career I have much valued ongoing participation in opportunities for professional development. I am registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists who maintain oversight of my Continuing Professional Development.
