My training equips me to work with adults and children with a broad spectrum of speech, language and communication needs. Since 1980 I have specialised in the assessment, diagnosis and management of developmental speech and language disorders. These include specific language impairments, and those related to Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyspraxia and developmental delay. I have always worked closely with those important in the child’s life  - including parents, carers, school staff, early years staff, paediatricians, health visitors and those within the child and adolescent mental health team. As a result I work in a variety of settings ranging from the child’s home and children’s centres to primary and high schools.

Management / Strategic Development
As a Team Leader I am responsible for leading a team of therapists and assistants providing assessment and therapeutic intervention for children and young people aged between 2 and 18 years of age. This has involved close liaison with health, education and social care as we have developed a more integrated service.I have authored and published guidelines for Suffolk Local Education Authority on developing children’s speech and language skills at both Primary and Secondary school level .I serve on the management board of a local Pupil Referral Unit, a Suffolk Local Education Authority provision for children with Emotional and Behavioural Disorders. I provide support for curriculum development and staff training.

Teaching / Training
Since 2004 an important part of my role has been the provision of training for professional staff in Norfolk and Suffolk. This has focused on helping staff to support children and young people with speech, language and communication (SLC) difficulties in early years and school settings. These training courses are accredited by the Open College Network and earn learners NVQ credits. More recently I have been able to develop bespoke training for settings or professional groups. The training I provide is always highly practical.

Supervision/ consultation
I have supervised many speech and language therapy students as well as providing supervision to colleagues working within my team. I have provided a number of reports as a specialist Speech and Language Therapist for Educational Tribunals for children with Special Educational Needs. I have developed guidelines with education colleagues on including children with speech, language and communication needs within the National Curriculum.

I have carried out research with colleagues into the most effective way of providing support for children with SLC needs within mainstream school settings. This involved tracking the progress of over 150 children over almost 2 years and evaluating the therapeutic interventions provided. I regularly instigate and oversee audits into clinical practice and service delivery within my team.

Continuing Professional Development
I meet the CPD requirements of my registering body on an annual basis. This involves attending relevant study days, keeping abreast of current research and maintaining proof of reflective practice.
