Susan Lyon, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

I am a Speech and Language Therapist and have worked within the NHS for over 30 Years. For the majority of my career I have worked in Language Units – specialist centres for children from 4 to 11 years situated within mainstream schools. Clinically I work with children and young people, their families/ carers and other important people in their lives. I have always worked as part of multi agency teams, believing this to be the most effective way of supporting children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication needs. Shared understanding of young people's difficultes by those who support them maximises the potential for progress. More recently I have enjoyed reviving my skills in working with younger children. As a result I am trained in VIG (Video Interaction Guidance). This allows me to share with parents the successful moments of interaction with their child – skills that underpin later language development. I qualified as a Registered Intermediary in November 2004 and assist as a Registered Intermediary in police interviews and for courts. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, learning to speak Spanish and trying to keep fit.
